Tokyo The Movie review
As a fan of anything Japan, I did not miss the chance to watch Tokyo The Movie and if you have any love for Japan then I strongly recommend that you watch it. Like “Paris Je T’ Aime,” it is a collection of three short films that give you a peek into the Japanese world.
Interior Design by Michel Gondry
In this short, a young couple try to make it in Tokyo and you will get to see a side of Japan that is somewhat not so obvious. Yes, in a rich country, there are people that struggle to make ends meet. Ayako Fujitani and Ryo Kase try their luck but end up facing many obstacles, until Ryo finds some success as a filmmaker but as a “loser” Ayako struggles till she gets transformed into something that gives purpose to her existence.
Merde by Leos Carax
As a gaijin I know what it is like to love Japan. You are never really a Japanese no matter how fluent you are in the language or how much you love the people, culture, and the country. Denis Lavant plays a man who lives in the sewers of Tokyo and does nothing but hurt innocent Japanese people. Obviously, in a safe country like Japan, it strikes terror, but what happens when he is convicted?
Shaking Tokyo by Bong Joon-Ho
In a country where men can fall in love with a pillow or want to marry their avatar, anything is possible. Yes, Teruyuki Kagawa is a hikikimori or someone who has isolated himself from the rest of the world. But guess what, he does fall in love with a girl who comes to deliver his pizza and then sets out to find her.
